Trader Joe’s opens in Hamden

A new Trader Joe’s location in Hamden, located on 46 Skiff St., is already drawing large crowds, especially with students from Quinnipiac University.

The grocery store, which opened in early February, has quickly become a convenient shopping option for students who previously had to travel to other towns for specialty groceries and prepared foods.

The former nearest location was in Orange. With both main campuses only a short drive away, many students say the new location fills a gap in nearby shopping choices.

“This Trader Joe’s has been awesome to have around and gives students lots of options in the area,” Drew Croce, a senior business major, said. “I personally have always preferred Trader Joe’s options to other grocery stores, so this location opening has definitely made me happy.”

For years, students without cars or with limited time between classes often relied on campus dining, delivery services or longer trips to surrounding towns for groceries. The arrival of Trader Joe’s offers a closer option, known for its affordable prepared meals and exclusive snacks.

Students who visited the store during its first few weeks reported that the aisles were crowded and the checkout lines were long, especially in the afternoons and evenings when classes ended.

College students often bring in a steady stream of customers, especially to stores that sell affordable and convenient food. The new Trader Joe’s is close enough to campus housing, off-campus apartments and major commuter routes that students can easily drive there.

“It’s definitely been busy, and lots of people have mentioned coming to this location from the Orange store,” Lauren, an employee at the Hamden Trader Joe’s, said. “It’s slowed down a bit since opening week, but there’s never an empty aisle, and we’re always checking out customers.”

The store has attracted people from all over Hamden and nearby towns, not just students. Customers fill their carts with groceries all day, while workers help restock shelves and show customers where to find popular items. Even after the first week of launch, the busy atmosphere has stayed consistent.

“My family and I love it here — we’ve already made three trips,” said Jason, a Hamden resident, said. “The food is worth the crowded store, and everyone has been pretty friendly, especially the workers.”

For students, the new Trader Joe’s is more than just a grocery store. It offers a nearby choice for low-priced meals, quick snacks and reasonable weekly shopping trips, making it easier to keep up with a busy schedule without leaving Hamden.
