CTtransit vehicles will no longer stop at the Hamden Plaza bus location starting Nov. 5.
The owner of the Hamden Plaza, Andrew Bermant, will remove the bus stop in its entirety in order to prevent the CTtransit vehicles from being able to stop in the plaza, according to Hamden Mayor Lauren Garrett.
The mayor’s office, the town engineer and the traffic authority are against this decision, but since the property belongs to Bermant, there is nothing that can be done to prevent the bus stop from being removed from Hamden Plaza, according to Garrett.
“Because the bus stop (is) taken out, CTtransit didn’t want to go onto private property when there wasn’t a bus stop there, because of liability reasons,” Garrett said.
Fliers from CTtransit’s New Haven division surround the bus stop, stating that the 228 and 238 routes will no longer go to Hamden Plaza in what is a permanent move due to “revoked access to the premises.”
This change will make things difficult for Hamden residents, as well as Hamden Plaza employees.
Roman Martinez, a 24-year-old Panera employee who works in Hamden Plaza, uses public transportation for work every day.
“Especially trying to head home,” Martinez said. “(I’ll) either try to get other transportation, or try to get Ubers more, but that’s expensive.”
The Hamden Plaza has over 30 stores with employees who utilize public transportation to get to work everyday.
The nearest bus stop to the Hamden Plaza for the 228 route is Mix Avenue opposite the Hamden Plaza and the nearest bus stop for the 238 route is Dixwell Avenue/ Hamden High School, making travel to Hamden Plaza inconvenient for employees and public transit users.
“This is really against, you know, all of the policies that are supported by the town as well as the state,” Garrett added. “And so it’s, it’s really, it’s, it’s a really bad move for people who rely on this transportation.”

Is this story true? The owner of Hamden Plaza is planning to suspend CT Transit for transporting patrons to his plaza. Unbelievable! If this story is true; I strongly suggest that he reconsiders! The economical impact on the end of the area will be greatly depleted!
That is just terrible!! What do the shops in Hamden Plaza have to say? They will be impacted most definitely. This is so inconsiderate. what is the owner’s problem with the bus service? What are we missing in this picture??
Gonna be very difficult to not go to Hamden plaza, because thousands of people rely on CT transportation.
I understand the pressure the owner is facing from the public outcry for something to be done about the thefts and muggings in the plaza. The majority of people riding public transportation, are law abiding citizens, who also want this lawlessness to stop. I personally use that bus stop to shop at several stores in the plaza. I feel sorry for the disabled and seniors, like myself, who are going to be inconvenienced and have to go out farther shop.
This is terrible especially senior citizens who shop at shoprite.
The mayor should be ashamed of themselves that shows you they don’t care about the people this is some bull you have people in wheelchair people that has to work that don’t drive this is a big mistake your making.
Absolutely I agree they’re definitely going to make it difficult for me that’s why I moved out here for convenience of plaza I’m disabled and unable to walk down hill
The changes have been indefinitely postponed. Please update the story to reflect that as the information presented in the story is dated and has begun to cause confusion with transit riders. Updated information from CTtransit is posted at the stops.
Thank you! On it.
I hope this story is not true. I hope the updated story is the owner changed his mind . This will affect the entire community. I have a car now, but for years I relied on the bus for shopping, eating, everything. We need elected officials to speak up, fight for the people. Elections are in November . Who are we electing in office.? The democract mayors are running against Republican candidates State reps. need to speak up. Don”t punish everyone for a few bad apples I see the police officers and security guards there . It looks like they are doing a great job.
This is crazy. Several of us depend on that bus to/from Hamden Plaza. What can we do to stop this?
