Last July, the town of Hamden and Noble Energy announced the construction of a new gas station and apartment building at 3311 Whitney Ave.
But construction had stalled — for almost an entire year.
Michael Frisbie, CEO of Noble Energy, originally bought the land from Quinnipiac University on Oct. 6, 2022 for $1,345 million. Construction Resources broke ground on the site July 20, 2023. One day last fall, the workers and equipment vanished, leaving the foundations of the building and surrounding fencing as all that remained of the project.
Hamden residents have been clamoring for an update – one that never came. The fenced-off site sat as an “eyesore” as many Hamden residents called it for nearly a year. But this past week, the site saw life once again as construction workers were seen resuming the project.
There are many theories surrounding the project being suspended, including financial troubles, tax laws in Hamden and lack of permits.
It remains to be seen the exact cause of why construction paused.
“We have been told construction will resume in a couple of days,” said Sean Grace, chief of staff for Mayor Lauren Garrett.
Eugene Livshits, Hamden’s town planner, did not have any further information regarding what caused the lengthy pause.
