If CVS adds more locations, Scozzafava says it \u201cwould improve geographical access to health care services for many.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Eight out of 10 Americans are within 10 miles of a CVS <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/x0MQvnPeY1\">https:\/\/t.co\/x0MQvnPeY1<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Quartz (@qz) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/qz\/status\/938122532372303872?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 5, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script> <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis strategy could also help to expedite the expansion of a new care delivery model, one which focuses on patient education, prevention, and management of chronic illness outside of the physician\u2019s office,\u201d Scozzafava said.<\/p>\n<p>This will also affect the insurance side of the deal. Scozzafava said, potentially, it \u201ccould offer companies a \u2018one-stop shopping\u2019 experience for their employees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople with Aetna insurance could have much of their preventative and disease management health care provided to them within the walls of the retail store,\u201d Scozzafava said.<\/p>\n<p>However, this may not be entirely positive. Scozzafava added that it \u201ccould also limit choices as to where one may go for care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also noted that another possible negative effect of the deal could be the distancing between patients and their primary care providers. But Scozzafava feels there is still potential for various positive changes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough the proper utilization of the CVS-Aetna health delivery model, the potential exists to help ease overcrowded emergency departments, improve patient ownership of their health, and decrease the cost of health care in the United States,\u201d Scozzafava said. However, he noted that \u201ca decrease in the cost of health care seems unlikely in our current climate, one that is dominated by private insurance companies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All of these possible scenarios rely on the deal actually going through. David Cadden, a Quinnipiac entrepreneurship and strategy professor emeritus, stressed that the merger still needs to be approved by the Department of Justice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrior attempts to merge the largest insurance companies in the country were shot down by (the Department of Justice),\u201d Cadden said.<\/p>\n<p>However, Cadden said this case is different. He said the CVS-Aetna deal would be considered a vertical merger because the two companies are in the same supply chain. The deals that he says were denied were horizontal mergers because they consisted of companies from the same industry.<\/p>\n<p>Cadden said CVS and Aetna \u201cwill argue that this merger will lead to significant cost savings, which then could be passed on to the consumer.\u201d<\/p>\n<div\n        class=\"\n          image-block-outer-wrapper\n          layout-caption-below\n          design-layout-inline\n          \n          \n          \n        \"\n        data-test=\"image-block-inline-outer-wrapper\"\n    ><\/p>\n<figure\n            class=\"\n              sqs-block-image-figure\n              intrinsic\n            \"\n            style=\"max-width:2000.0px;\"\n        ><\/p>\n<div\n              \n                style=\"padding-bottom:100.0%;\"\n              \n              class=\"\n                image-block-wrapper\n                \n          \n        \n                has-aspect-ratio\n              \"\n              data-animation-role=\"image\"\n              \n  data-animation-override\n\n          ><br \/>\n            <noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/hqnn.org\/hqpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/pharmacy.jpg\" alt=\"For people with Aetna insurance, the deal may limit where they can fill prescriptions.&amp;nbsp;\" \/><\/noscript><img class=\"thumb-image\" data-src=\"http:\/\/hqnn.org\/hqpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/pharmacy.jpg\" data-image=\"http:\/\/hqnn.org\/hqpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/pharmacy.jpg\" data-image-dimensions=\"2000x2000\" data-image-focal-point=\"0.5,0.5\" alt=\"For people with Aetna insurance, the deal may limit where they can fill prescriptions.&amp;nbsp;\" data-load=\"false\" data-image-id=\"5a29844fe2c4835b8644147e\" data-type=\"image\" \/>\n          <\/div><figcaption class=\"image-caption-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"image-caption\">\n<p>For people with Aetna insurance, the deal may limit where they can fill prescriptions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIf they can demonstrate this, there is a significant probability that the Department of Justice would approve the merger,\u201d Cadden said.<\/p>\n<p>The question of whether or not the deal will be approved is part of a larger atmosphere of uncertainty within the health care industry, with its future remaining unclear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur U.S. health care system is going through uncertain times,\u201d Scozzafava said. \u201cThe political changes in Washington have led to uncertainty with Medicare funding and the (Affordable Care Act).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also,&nbsp;there is the threat of new competitors in the health care industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRetail stores like CVS are responding to the threat of e-commerce, more specifically Amazon potentially entering the pharmaceutical distribution business,\u201d Scozzafava said. \u201cAmazon has proven its ability to disrupt longstanding shopping behaviors and CVS may be trying to get ahead of the change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The deal with CVS could be the second major Aetna-related change for Connecticut this year. In June, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.courant.com\/business\/hc-aetna-hq-nyc-20170629-story.html\">insurance company announced<\/a> that it would be moving its headquarters to New York City after being in Hartford for 164 years.
