However, Buda admits that sometimes it can be longer due to lack of information or other factors.<\/p>\n<p data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">She notes that the length of the process is one reason why students are more hesitant to come forward. <\/p>\n<p data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">\n<div\n        class=\"\n          image-block-outer-wrapper\n          layout-caption-below\n          design-layout-inline\n          combination-animation-none\n          individual-animation-none\n          individual-text-animation-none\n        \"\n        data-test=\"image-block-inline-outer-wrapper\"\n    ><\/p>\n<figure\n            class=\"\n              sqs-block-image-figure\n              intrinsic\n            \"\n            style=\"max-width:1587.0px;\"\n        ><\/p>\n<div\n              \n                style=\"padding-bottom:141.4618682861328%;\"\n              \n              class=\"\n                image-block-wrapper\n                \n          \n        \n                has-aspect-ratio\n              \"\n              data-animation-role=\"image\"\n              \n  \n\n          ><br \/>\n            <noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/hqnn.org\/hqpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Buda_quote.png\" alt=\"Buda_quote.png\" \/><\/noscript><img class=\"thumb-image\" data-src=\"http:\/\/hqnn.org\/hqpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Buda_quote.png\" data-image=\"http:\/\/hqnn.org\/hqpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Buda_quote.png\" data-image-dimensions=\"1587x2245\" data-image-focal-point=\"0.5,0.5\" alt=\"Buda_quote.png\" data-load=\"false\" data-image-id=\"5bae96d8c83025a779b98e45\" data-type=\"image\" \/>\n          <\/div>\n<\/figure><\/div>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">\u201cWhat I have seen, especially in the spring semester last year, is complainants coming forward and saying \u2018I don\u2019t want a formal process, I just don\u2019t want the same thing to happen to someone else,\u2019\u201d Buda said. \u201cThe most common request I received last semester was, \u2018Can you just keep a name of someone who\u2019s doing things we don\u2019t like?\u2019 No, we can\u2019t just keep a running list, but there are certain matters we can handle informally with an informal resolution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">That informal resolution can include, but isn\u2019t limited to, no contact orders and\/or relocation of housing assignments. <\/p>\n<p data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Resident assistants are also mandated reporters, meaning they are required to report any Title IX violation they are aware of. Senior Vanessa Harris, who has been an RA for two years, has had to utilize this system more than once. <\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">\u201cAs an RA for freshman, unfortunately I had a lot of sexual assault related issues with my residents,\u201d Harris said. \u201cThere were two of them who actually came to me and said \u2018this happened to me.\u2019 But in other instances, because they know that I\u2019m a mandated reporter and that I will tell, they\u2019ll say \u201chypothetically, if this happened\u2026\u201d And it\u2019s obvious that it did happen. It really changed my outlook on everything..jpg\" data-load=\"false\" data-image-id=\"5bae992e652deaef5832af91\" data-type=\"image\" \/>\n          <\/div>\n<\/figure><\/div>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">This has an enormous effect on Harris, since she decided to become an RA in hopes of assisting the Quinnipiac community and helping her residents cope with any issues they may have. She didn\u2019t realize just how many issues she\u2019d come across.<\/p>\n<p data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">\u201cBefore I was an RA, I looked at Quinnipiac and didn\u2019t really think that anything was happening on campus,\u201d she said. \u201cThen as an RA, it\u2019s like wow, there\u2019s a lot that\u2019s happening on campus that we aren\u2019t notified about because we are a private university. It changed my outlook on everything, really.<\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">However, Harris greatly values the fact that her residents trust her enough to tell her about something as serious as sexual assault or harassment allegations. <\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">\u201cI realize how challenging it is for them to come forward and why a lot of them don\u2019t want to,\u201d she said. \u201cThey\u2019re ridiculed in the media, like Dr. Ford is right now, and that\u2019s just not something you want to sit around a table and chat about all night. Overall, it\u2019s been rewarding because I know I was able to do my job and I\u2019m thankful I can help them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">When coming forward with a Title IX related concern, Quinnipiac also gives students the opportunity to report the incident to the Hamden Police Department, but it is not required. Buda notes that the way the university conducts the investigation can be quite different than the way the police do. <\/p>\n<p data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">\u201cThe police have a different threshold than we do,\u201d she said. \u201cIt may take them longer to do an investigation than it may take us to do an investigation. But, we\u2019re able to provide different accommodations that the police may not be able to. Likewise, we have a lower threshold to hold someone responsible because we don\u2019t call them guilty since it\u2019s not a court of law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Buda said she doesn\u2019t think the number of sexual harassment cases at Quinnipiac are any higher than the national average. There were two formally reported rapes on campus in 2016, four in 2015 and five in 2014. <\/p>\n<p data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">These numbers do not include informal reports and\/or other Title IX and sexual harassment cases other than the act of rape. <\/p>\n<div\n        class=\"\n pre-wrap;\">Harris knows that statistics aren\u2019t always an accurate representation of how many students have actually experienced sexual harassment because it is not an easy thing to tell someone about. <\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">\u201cIt can be really challenging because a lot of the times, as a victim of sexual assault you don\u2019t want to relive that situation,\u201d Harris said. \u201cYou don\u2019t really want to rehash who and where and why and how.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">However, Harris says she hopes that the recent #MeToo and #WhyIDidntReport movements inspire women to feel more comfortable and empowered to report any incident they may have endured. <\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Quinnipiac encourages any member of the university community who is struggling to cope with the after effects of sexual assault, harassment, abuse or any other crisis, to utilize any of the resources listed below.
