People posts about our friends, family, pets, adventures, food, the list is endless. However, are these social media posts causing more harm than they are good when it comes to future career opportunities?<\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The way this generation presents themselves online says a lot about the type of people they are. It shows who they hang out with, how they spend our time, what their likes and dislikes are, and even what others say about them. With access to so much information about a person just by a simple Google search, it\u2019s important to be aware of what you\u2019re posting, because some companies take social media accounts into consideration when looking to hire someone for a job or internship.<\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Kristina Rosa, a producer for the show LA Daily on SiriusXM, says looking at social media accounts are important to her because it shows a person\u2019s ability to be creative with a limited amount of characters.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cI look to see if the person is active daily or at least a few times a week, how the interaction is with articles or direct tweets, if the person only complains, or gives insightful feedback on articles or about a tweet,\u201d Rosa said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>   <a id='LwIp69oXTsxtcybJCETbAw' class='gie-single' href='http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/1131586574' target='_blank' style='color:#a7a7a7;text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;border:none;display:inline-block;'>Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'LwIp69oXTsxtcybJCETbAw',sig:'G-LFO_NHmswVLtBdLbGh6oWOQXRV0fSP5jUPBsu8PMk=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'1131586574',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Twitter is one social medium that could be used to either help or hurt a potential job candidate depending on how they use it. Lila Carney, the Director for Advising and Student Development in the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University, believes Twitter can be very effective if used wisely. <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cTwitter has a lot of potential for students in career development. It\u2019s a great resource for looking for jobs,\u201d Carney said. \u201cYou can tweet at a company and a lot of times somebody will tweet back at you. If a company is highly competitive, showing that you follow them on Twitter, that you liked their articles, that maybe you\u2019ve written your own stuff and that you\u2019ve tweeted that at a company, I think goes a long way. There\u2019s a lot of ways that students can help themselves stand out to employers on social media that goes beyond sending in a cover letter and resume.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div \n  class=\"sqs-audio-embed\"\n  data-url=\"http:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/59b57bcaf14aa14c97ba6c77\/59b59ff649fc2b50d0949f00\/5c93ec56e2c4830d429af7b1\/1553198169228\/Lila+Carney+Audio+Clip.mp3\/original\/Lila+Carney+Audio+Clip.mp3\"\n  data-mime-type=\"\"\n  data-title=\"Interview with Lila Carney\"\n  data-author=\"\"\n  data-show-download=\"false\"\n  data-design-style=\"minimal\"\n  data-duration-in-ms=\"73000\"\n  data-color-theme=\"dark\"\n\n  \n>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Carney also believes there are more beneficial ways to positively represent yourself on social media. <\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cUsing LinkedIn effectively is probably the best social media for students in terms of just kind of putting out there what their professional social media presence will be,\u201d Carney said. \u201cWhether that\u2019s sharing articles, reacting to things, commenting on other people\u2019s posts, following people that they\u2019re interested in, connecting with people that they\u2019re interested in networking with. I think LinkedIn is a great social media for students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">According to research done by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.careerbuilder.ca\/share\/aboutus\/pressreleasesdetail.aspx?sd=5%2f14%2f2015&amp;siteid=cbpr&amp;sc_cmp1=cb_pr893_&amp;id=pr893&amp;ed=12%2f31%2f2015\">CareerBuilder<\/a>, most employers aren\u2019t trying to find anything negative on social media to prevent you from getting the job. Sixty percent are actually just looking to find that the candidate has the qualifications they\u2019re looking for. <\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">In an anonymous survey of over 20 Quinnipiac University students,&nbsp; 43.5 percent said they prefer Twitter over any other form of social media. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/money.usnews.com\/money\/blogs\/outside-voices-careers\/articles\/2017-08-03\/how-social-media-can-help-and-harm-your-job-search\">USNews.com<\/a>, they\u2019re looking for information that supports that candidates qualifications for the job, the professionalism of the persons online persona, and what others are posting about them. <\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Sam Morales, a sophomore at Quinnipiac University said she doesn\u2019t consider what she posts because she knows it\u2019s nothing bad. However, she\u2019s always aware of how others are portraying her.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cOther people can post pictures of you and it can be seen on your account,\u201d Morales said. \u201cI\u2019ve been tagged in pictures with my friends who are over 21 that had drinks in them but I just make sure I untag myself so it\u2019s not associated with me through my account.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">What others are posting about you could also be something to consider. You may have a clean social media reputation, but it doesn\u2019t mean your friends do. It\u2019s important to be cautious of what you\u2019re being tagged in, because that\u2019s also something employers can see.<\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Rosa believes that posting the wrong content on social media can definitely negatively affect the way you look towards an employer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cIt can hurt if they are applying for a tech internship or job if their social media doesn\u2019t show anything about that. Also it can hurt if they only post about partying or only post about relationships but they are not applying for a job that fits that,\u201d Rosa said. <\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cI think that employers know that this generation is known for posting things that could be inappropriate and companies don\u2019t want the liability of taking on someone that may be posting things that are terrible or embarrassing to the company,\u201d Carney added. She believes that if you\u2019re posting something, make sure it\u2019s something you wouldn\u2019t mind your grandma seeing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">With the negative connotation that\u2019s around social media these days, some people think this generation is addicted to it, it\u2019s a distraction, or people can\u2019t live without it. I for one have a big Twitter addiction,\u201d Caracciolo said. \u201cBut, to me Twitter is more branding than it is social media because of how brands interact with people and how people brand themselves.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">In addition to Caracciolo, Mikey Zukswert graduated from the Quinnipiac University School of Communications in 2018. He also agrees that social media sites like Twitter and Instagram can be used to promote what one has to offer. <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cI definitely use social media, Instagram specifically, to showcase my work and what I can create. Being in the film industry, this is really important,\u201d Zukswert said. \u201cBecause Instagram\u2019s purpose is to share videos and photos, I like to use it to do exactly that. I\u2019m able to show who I am as a creator and what skills I have to offer and Instagram is a public platform to do so.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Based on student\u2019s responses, they\u2019re frequently posting on social media. It\u2019s the times we live in nowadays, many say it\u2019s hard to remember life before Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and the many other sites that are offered to us.<\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">When Rosa gives advice to her interns, she suggests \u201cto stick with a theme for social media and figure out your passion. If it\u2019s about dogs and helping animals, post about that, but if you really want a job about entertainment then post about topics that are pop culture related.\u201d <\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Sticking with what you\u2019re passionate about can show your dedication and knowledge of your career goals.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">In terms of if that\u2019s a good or bad thing, \u201cI personally think there is so much more beneficial stuff out there in terms of careers or resources for me and students when it comes to social media,\u201d Carney said. \u201cI think it far outweighs the bad stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but what are your pictures saying about you?
