Yeah, I\u2019m 100% here,\u201d &nbsp;senior John Ferraro said.<\/p>\n<p data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">St. Baldrick\u2019s is a nonprofit organization that was founded on July 4, 1999, by three entrepreneurs as a way to pay it forward by providing research funding exclusively for childhood cancer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The foundation\u2019s inaugural event was hosted on St. Patrick\u2019s Day 2000. In just one day $104,000 was raised by 19 shavees.<\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The past two decades have seen over 4,000 St. Baldrick\u2019s events take place worldwide and nearly 200,000 individuals have \u201crocked the bald\u201d in solidarity with children fighting cancer. Since its founding, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stbaldricks.org\/see-the-impact\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">St. Baldrick\u2019s has raised over $258 million<\/span><\/a>, funding extensive research and even breakthroughs. According to the St. Baldrick&#8217;s Foundation, together they have raised $783,746.\n<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Since 2009 when Quinnipiac\u2019s Student Programming Board (SPB) first teamed up with St. Baldrick\u2019s, it\u2019s held a fundraiser and hosted a head-shaving event as an opportunity for students to get involved and give back. <\/p>\n<div\n        class=\"\n event,\u201d &nbsp;said Emma Shipton, a member of SPB and chairperson for the event. <\/p>\n<p data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Shipton had never taken part in a St. Baldrick\u2019s event before and was relatively unfamiliar with the foundation prior to taking on the role of event chair. style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cThis is actually my first year hosting it, and it\u2019s also the first time I\u2019ve ever been able to attend, but SPB has been involved all 10 years,\u201d Shipton said. \u201cIt\u2019s really exciting to be part of an event that\u2019s become part of Quinnipiac\u2019s tradition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Although the head-shaving showcase is the hallmark of the St. Baldrick\u2019s foundation, SPB seeks to remind students that they don\u2019t have to go bald to be involved. From joining a fundraising team to making an individual donation, there are many ways to participate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">A few students took it upon themselves to go above and beyond. In addition to shaving his head, Luke Ahearn was also this year\u2019s top fundraiser. <\/p>\n<p data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cI would post on my Facebook page and Instagram to let people know what\u2019s happening and to ask them to donate to St. Baldrick\u2019s foundation,\u201d &nbsp;Ahearn said. \u201cI also would go around and just use word of mouth, \u2018Hey, St. Baldrick\u2019s is coming up, please donate or sign up.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">His hard work paid off as Ahearn was able to single-handedly raise $575 in donations for the organization.<\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cI thankfully have never felt any direct connection to childhood cancer, but I\u2019ve had friends who\u2019ve been close to people who\u2019ve had to deal with childhood cancer,\u201d &nbsp;Ahearn said. \u201c[St. Baldrick\u2019s] really made me understand that I can do something to help out those kids, and that\u2019s why I got involved.\u201d <\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Ahearn has been raising money and shaving his head for the St. Baldrick\u2019s foundation since his freshman year. On the team since his freshman year, Ahearn said that the St. Baldrick\u2019s fundraiser is something he and his teammates look forward to each year. <\/p>\n<p data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cEvery year [New Blue Rugby] has had pretty good participation,\u201d Ahearn said. \u201cUsually it\u2019s something that everybody who\u2019s new to our team does. They all do it together and it\u2019s a good bonding opportunity for a lot of the guys, both going through the head shaving together and getting to give back to a really good cause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Ahearn and his teammates appeared to have no qualms about shaving their heads. Others, like Emma Shipton, were a bit more troubled about trading in their tresses. <\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cMy director is shaving his head and he\u2019s pretty much convinced me that I should be shaving my head too,\u201d said Shipton. \u201cI think I will.\u201d <\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">And she did.
