{"id":73,"date":"2017-10-11T23:30:53","date_gmt":"2017-10-11T23:30:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hqnn.org\/hqpress\/2017\/10\/11\/2017109breast-cancer-awareness-month\/"},"modified":"2020-09-05T19:53:38","modified_gmt":"2020-09-05T19:53:38","slug":"2017109breast-cancer-awareness-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hqnn.org\/hqpress\/2017\/10\/11\/2017109breast-cancer-awareness-month\/","title":{"rendered":"What we are watching this week &#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Camila Costa<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"text-align-center\">BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:11pt\">October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and people from the Quinnipiac community, Hamden and the greater New Haven area are all doing something to help survivors.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Breast Cancer Awareness Month- 2 Hamden police cruisers will be displayed in pink patrolling the streets for the month of October. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/bcam?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#bcam<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/JuDnuGRXtM\">pic.twitter.com\/JuDnuGRXtM<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 HAMDEN POLICE &#8211; CT (@HAMDENPOLICECT) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HAMDENPOLICECT\/status\/915576693053681671?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 4, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:11pt\">In addition to the Hamden police department changing the colors of two patrol cars to pink, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/main.acsevents.org\/site\/TR\/MakingStridesAgainstBreastCancer\/MSABCCY17NE?pg=entry&amp;fr_id=84787\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\">The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"> is hosting a walk on Oct. 15, at 1 p.m. at Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven, Connecticut.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:11pt\">Registration for the event starts at 9 a.m. and there will be an opening ceremony at noon, an hour before the walk starts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:11pt\">So far, Strides has raised $50,976, with six days left to achieve their goal of $101,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:11pt\">Earlier in the semester, Quinnipiac hosted <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hqpress.org\/blog\/2017\/9\/11\/relay-for-life?rq=relay\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\">Relay For Life<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"> and raised more than $33,000 to fight cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:11pt\">Lynn Aureli, a Quinnipiac student and cancer survivor, participated in this year&#8217;s Relay For Life. She has also been a part of other events, including <\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\">Light the Night Walks for the Leukemia &amp; Lymphoma Society.<\/span><\/p>\n<div\n        class=\"\n <\/div>\n<\/figure><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size:12pt\">\u201cI think Quinnipiac does do a good job helping the fight against cancer. &nbsp;We have Relay for Life, Saint Baldrick&#8217;s, and Bobcats Against Cancer. &nbsp;I also know there is a fraternity whose philanthropy is the American Cancer Society and the new sorority, Tri Delta&#8217;s philanthropy is Saint Judes,\u201d said Aureli. \u201cI think it would be a good idea for all of these organizations to come together for one big event to help the fight against cancer.\u201d <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:11pt\">One of Quinnipiac&#8217;s own Chartwells workers, Leyenda DaSilva, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014 and after being cancer free for two years, the disease returned and spread to her lymph nodes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:11pt\">Quinnipiac junior, Becca Denning, created a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/6d7bwc\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\">GoFundMe page<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"> to help raise money for DaSilva, and successfully<\/span><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"> raised $2,062 in two months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:11pt\">To help causes like DaSilva\u2019s, click <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/secure.acsevents.org\/site\/SPageServer\/?pagename=strides_donate_now\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"> and donate to Strides to make a difference in the battle to fight cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 class=\"text-align-center\">PARENTS WEEKEND<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:11pt\">One of Quinnipiac\u2019s most active weekends, Parents and Family Weekend, is being held on Oct. 13 to 15.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:11pt\">The Toyota Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford, Conn. will be hosting an exclusive concert for Quinnipiac students and their families on Friday at 8 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:11pt\">The performance will be \u201ccelebrating <\/span><span style=\"font-size:11pt\">the fusion of classical music with classic rock features the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, five world-class vocalists and five top rock musicians,\u201d according to an announement on <a target=\"_blank\"
