{"id":746,"date":"2019-04-25T00:08:59","date_gmt":"2019-04-25T00:08:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hqnn.org\/hqpress\/2019\/04\/25\/2019424making-way-for-quinnipiacs-new-strategic-plan\/"},"modified":"2020-09-05T19:31:40","modified_gmt":"2020-09-05T19:31:40","slug":"2019424making-way-for-quinnipiacs-new-strategic-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hqnn.org\/hqpress\/2019\/04\/25\/2019424making-way-for-quinnipiacs-new-strategic-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"Making way for Quinnipiac\u2019s new strategic plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align:center;white-space:pre-wrap;\">Vice president of admissions and financial aid to leave the university<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;white-space:pre-wrap;\" class=\"\">By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/rachaeldurand\/\">Rachael Durand<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Judy Olian is putting her strategic plan into action by making room for a new senior cabinet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Olian announced in a recent email to faculty and staff that three vice presidents will leave Quinnipiac University at the beginning of the 2019-20 academic year. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Greg Eichhorn, who oversees admissions and financial aid, is gone at the end of June. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Joining him in an administrative exodus &#8212; but via retirements after years of service &#8212; &nbsp;are Lynn Bushnell, vice president for public affairs, and Don Weinbach, who has been at the helm of the development and alumni affairs office since 1996. Executive Vice President and Provost Mark Thompson announced earlier this semester that he has taken the job of president at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston. Thompson\u2019s departure for a higher position, Eichhorn is leaving under different circumstances &#8212; he no longer fits into Olian\u2019s plans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The strategic plan is designed to develop Quinnipiac into a university of the future. That future did not have room for Eichhorn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cThere is a strategic shift in this position and I accept that,\u201d Eichhorn said. \u201cThe conversations I have had with the president and provost are about the future and the strategic plan for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Eichhorn, who was accompanied during the interview by John Morgan, associate vice president for public affairs, denied he was being forced out, saying his departure was a mutual decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cAfter discussions with the president and the provost, we\u2019ve agreed that the position is going in a different direction and this is the best thing for the institution,\u201d Eichhorn said. \u201cAnd that\u2019s what I care about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Eichhorn\u2019s tenure was short. He came to the university only three years ago after serving a 24-year tenure at Albright University in Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cCandidly, I was in a great place at Albright and loved it,\u201d Eichhorn said. \u201cQuinnipiac recruited me for a while and it finally got to the point where we said as a family, this is a great opportunity and I\u2019ve got to take it, and I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">As the vice president for admissions and financial aid, Eichhorn has been in charge of overseeing graduate and undergraduate admissions and all aspects of financial aid. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\n<div\n        class=\"\n          image-block-outer-wrapper\n          layout-caption-below\n          design-layout-inline\n          combination-animation-none\n          individual-animation-none\n          individual-text-animation-none\n        \"\n        data-test=\"image-block-inline-outer-wrapper\"\n    ><\/p>\n<figure\n            class=\"\n              sqs-block-image-figure\n              intrinsic\n            \"\n            style=\"max-width:1208.0px;\"\n        ><\/p>\n<div\n              \n                style=\"padding-bottom:90.39735412597656%;\"\n              \n              class=\"\n                image-block-wrapper\n                \n          \n        \n                has-aspect-ratio\n              \"\n              data-animation-role=\"image\"\n              \n  \n\n          ><br \/>\n            <noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/hqnn.org\/hqpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/img_5f53e79fc97df.png\" alt=\"An e-mail from Olian sent to faculty, staff and students on Jan. 29 regarding the strategic plan.\" \/><\/noscript><img class=\"thumb-image\" data-src=\"http:\/\/hqnn.org\/hqpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/img_5f53e79fc97df.png\" data-image=\"http:\/\/hqnn.org\/hqpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/img_5f53e79fc97df.png\" data-image-dimensions=\"1208x1092\" data-image-focal-point=\"0.5,0.5\" alt=\"An e-mail from Olian sent to faculty, staff and students on Jan. 29 regarding the strategic plan.\" data-load=\"false\" data-image-id=\"5cc0eda21905f4881a1d7b97\" data-type=\"image\" \/>\n          <\/div><figcaption class=\"image-caption-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"image-caption\">\n<p class=\"\">An e-mail from Olian sent to faculty, staff and students on Jan. 29 regarding the strategic plan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The strategic plan, which Thompson first introduced to the Faculty Senate in late January, has four main points to be carried out over the next few years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The purpose of this plan is to build an institution-wide mindset to prepare graduates for citizenship and 21st-century careers; create an inclusive, excellence-driven community; nurture and positively impact internal, local and global communities; and foster lifelong connections and success, according to the first draft of the Quinnipiac Strategic Plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Called \u201cA blueprint for the future,\u201d the plan took shape after faculty and staff worked in task forces to create original drafts. Olian then collated these drafts and is weighing feedback from town hall-style meetings. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\n<p class=\"\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The fourth of the four prongs addressed in the plan is \u201cto foster lifelong success and communities,\u201d which directly involves the office Eichhorn oversees. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cThis position will move a little more from a recruiting (and the) financial aid program to what\u2019s called enrollment management,\u201d Eichhorn said. \u201cSo, it will be involved with those aspects as well as some retention aspects with the position, that\u2019s the biggest change &#8212; and be more involved with the provost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">With Eichhorn leaving and the position reshaped, the search for his successor is underway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Eichhorn said he thinks that the right person can lead the university to greater things.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cA talented person that is supported can help raise the institution to the next level,\u201d Eichhorn said. \u201cI think it\u2019s a great opportunity for the person that will come into this seat after me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">As for Eichhorn, he will seek employment in higher education, but, he hopes, with more responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cI want to do something similar to what I am doing now,\u201d Eichhorn said. \u201cMaybe for a smaller institution where I have more than just admissions and financial aid. That\u2019s what I had at Albright &#8212; I had athletics, I had camps and conferences, so I am looking potentially for more things under the umbrella.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Eichhorn says what\u2019s next for him will always be a family decision. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cWe are fortunate I have some options,\u201d Eichhorn said. \u201cWe are literally weighing those and doing some travel to those locations to see what is right for my wife, my son and I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">According to a letter to the editor published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhregister.com\/opinion\/article\/Quinnipiac-trustees-President-has-our-full-13664470.php\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">New Haven Register,<\/span><\/a> the strategic plan has the full support of the Quinnipiac board of trustees said chairman William Weldon on behalf of the the board. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The final draft of the strategic plan will be released to faculty on May 3. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">As Judy Olian\u2019s new strategic plan starts to take shape, members of the senior management team are leaving the university.
