Knife in hand: A fight broke out between two QU students, leaving both in the hospital

Hamden Police are investigating a fight between two Quinnipiac University roommates that took place early Friday morning and left one hospitalized after suffering a stab wound to the neck.

The victim, unnamed at this time, was released from the hospital. The university suspended the suspect, also unnamed, according to Quinnipiac’s Interim Chief of Public Safety Don DiStefano.

“The student who allegedly caused the injuries has been suspended from the university pending the outcome of the investigation and student conduct meeting,” DiStefano said.

Officer Paul Calamita responded to the 3:10 a.m. call at 275 Mount Carmel Ave. and said he found a 20-year-old student with a “large laceration” on his neck. The student told Calamita that his roommate jumped on top of him in his sleep and punched him.

The suspect and the victim got into an argument about a light in the room, according to a police statement, but no additional details were provided at this time. The roommate, who wielded a knife, reportedly cut the victim’s throat and Calamita and Quinnipiac Public Safety were later able to negotiate and safely disarm the suspect.

Both students were then transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital.

“The Hamden Police are actively investigating, and our Public Safety Department will continue to support the investigation,” DiStefano said.

Although Quinnipiac has not issued an official public statement, rumors reportedly flew around campus all day on Friday. For instance, a first-year student released a video on TikTok earlier today, noting her roommate had just seen the suspect before he returned to his suite. The video has since been taken down.

HQNN will provide further updates as they come in.
