Spring concert is cancelled, SPB is looking for new options

COVID-19 derails Wake the Giant for a second year in a row.

Wake the Giant concerts are an annual highlight at Quinnipiac, but for the second time in a row, there won’t be a concert. To compensate, the Student Programming Board (SPB) is working on alternative options to give students a fun experience.

Brianna Hasso, mainstage chair for SPB, is working on ideas to replace the spring concert.

“We are looking for a fun event that people can join in from anywhere, but we can’t program anything like the typical spring concert,” she said.

In the past, artists like Tiesto, Khalid and Jason Derulo performed at Quinnipiac’s spring concert.

Most students, albeit bummed, understood why the concerts were cancelled.

“It’s sad that I only got to experience two concerts, but I think it is the right decision to cancel this year’s concert,” senior psychology major Haley Anderson said.

Jordon Bennett, a junior communications major, on the other hand, said he thinks the concert could’ve taken place.

“We are all getting tested. I didn’t understand why there were no spectators allowed at games and now they’re cancelling one of the best highlights in the spring semester again,” Bennett said.

Hasso and her team are in contract negotiations with partners, although they have not yet decided what will replace the concert.

“As of right now, what is happening in place of the spring concert is confidential,” resident of SPB, Tyler McNeill, said.

While McNeill and his team organized Halloweek last October, the pandemic has hindered many SPB program events. Despite the challenges in the past semesters, SPB has still managed to host events in person, like Bingo or Trivia-night.

“SPB always strives to give the students the best experience possible, and I’m positive post COVID we will be able to plan more and better again,” Hasso said.
