Quinnipiac University sees increase in hate crimes and burglary

The university released its Clery Report this past week, where they saw an uptick in some areas.

Quinnipiac University released their annual Security and Fire Safety Report (Clery Report) for the Mount Carmel and York Hill campuses on its website on Oct. 5.

The Clery Act requires all public and private universities to release information on certain crimes that occur in both on-campus or on non-campus properties. The information provided in this report includes criminal offenses, violence against women, arrests, referrals and hate crimes.

The amount of hate crimes went up by a small margin from the previous school year, as there were three in total, all on the Mount Carmel Campus. Two of the hate crimes were based on national origin, while the other was based on race. Each of these acts was reported as intimidation. Prior to this year, there were five hate crimes in 2018 and two in 2019. From 2018 to 2020, there were no cases identified as a simple assault or larceny. For vandalism, there were no cases in 2020, but there were three in 2018 and two in 2019.

No aggravated assaults took place in 2020, but seven cases were reported in the two previous years. The number of cases with rape at the university decreased from five to three from 2019 to 2020.

There was only one case of burglary in 2019, but the number of cases increased to nine in 2020, according to the report. Among the nine, five of them happened at the Mount Carmel Campus and two happened at the York Hill Campus.

When it came to violence against women, the university saw an increase in cases with stalking from none in 2018, five in 2019 to seven in 2020. Five of the seven offenses for stalking happened on the Mount Carmel Campus. No domestic violence cases have been reported in the last three years, but there have been two cases of dating violence in the past two years.

There has been a steady increase in liquor law violation referrals since 2018. With 487 violations in 2020, the number has increased by just over 100 since 2019 and 160 since 2018. There were 327 referrals in 2018 and 379 in 2019.

Even though the university saw an increase in these categories, the amount of drug law violation referrals fell to 121 in 2020 from 175 in 2019.  The university had two Illegal possession of weapon referrals.
