Hamden Police reopen local synagogue amid investigation into bomb threat

Hamden officials declared Mishkan Israel safe after the local synagogue received a bomb threat Thursday.

Hamden Police Department officials reopened Congregation Mishkan Israel synagogue, and deemed it safe, Mayor Lauren Garrett wrote on Facebook Thursday following a bomb threat earlier in the day.

“Congregation Mishkan Israel received a bomb threat,” Garrett said. “Many similar threats were made the last several days around the country.”

Congregation Mishkan Israel — located at 785 Ridge Road in Hamden — canceled all events Thursday, including its preschool, due to the threat.

This threat comes amid a national rise in bomb threats to Jewish institutions — up from eight in 2021 to 91 in 2022 according to the Anti-Defamation League

“Any threat to the safety of our community is unacceptable and is taken seriously,” Garrett wrote.

Hamden police are investigating the threat, Garrett wrote on Facebook. Officials encourage anyone with more information about the incident to contact the police department at (203) 230-4000.
